Import and export

A dashboard is one JSON document. Export it to keep a copy, review a change, or move it to another environment. Import it to replace a dashboard’s content.

Export

  1. Open the dashboard.
  2. Open the settings menu (the gear) and choose Export Dashboard.
  3. Select Download as JSON file, or Copy to clipboard.

The file holds the layout, widgets, filters, saved queries and settings. It holds no data, no credentials and no permissions.

With the API, the same document is the data field of a load:

curl -H "Authorization: Bearer $TOKEN" \ https://dashboards.example.com/tenants/acme/scopes/ops/dashboards/sales \ | jq '.data' > sales.json

Import

  1. Open the dashboard you want to replace, or create an empty one.
  2. Open the settings menu and choose Import Dashboard.
  3. Choose Upload File and select the JSON file, or choose Paste JSON and paste it.
  4. Select Import.

The import replaces the current content, and the dashboard saves on its own. Undo restores the previous version until you leave the page.

The server validates the document before it accepts it. A file over 1 MiB, or one whose version is not 2, is refused.

Moving between environments

Saved queries name connections and operations by ID. Those IDs usually differ between environments, so after importing:

  1. Open Saved queries.
  2. For each query, choose the matching connection and operation in this environment.
  3. Check that each widget shows data.

Widgets the destination does not know show a “widget not available” message instead of breaking the page.

Permissions are not part of the document. Set them again in the destination with Manage permissions.

Import many dashboards at once

To load many existing dashboards into a new server, use importDashboards from the server library. It defaults to a dry run, never overwrites, and reports each dashboard as imported, skipped, refused or failed. See Server library.
