Telemetry

Telemetry is the raw data transmitted by devices to the platform. Understanding telemetry is foundational to working with ModularIoT.

What is Telemetry?

Telemetry refers to the automated collection and transmission of data from remote devices. In ModularIoT, telemetry encompasses:

  • Location data - GPS coordinates, speed, heading
  • Sensor readings - Temperature, pressure, voltage
  • Vehicle data - Engine parameters, fuel levels, diagnostics
  • Events - Ignition, door opens, threshold crossings

Telemetry vs Metrics

Telemetry is raw, device-specific data in the format sent by the device.

Metrics are normalized, canonical representations extracted from telemetry.

The platform transforms telemetry into metrics through drivers.

Characteristics of Telemetry

  • Time-stamped - Every reading has an associated time
  • Device-specific - Format depends on manufacturer
  • Variable quality - May contain gaps, delays, or errors
  • High volume - Devices often report frequently
