Events

Events represent discrete occurrences in time, distinct from continuous metric measurements.

What is an Event?

An event is a record of something that happened at a specific moment:

  • Ignition on/off - Engine state changes
  • Geofence entry/exit - Boundary crossings
  • Harsh braking - Driving behavior incidents
  • Door open/close - Access events
  • Alarm triggered - Security events

Events vs Metrics

Metrics are continuous measurements (temperature is 72°F).

Events are discrete occurrences (door opened at 3:15 PM).

Both carry timestamps, but events capture state changes while metrics capture state values.

Events vs Symptoms

Events are factual records of occurrences.

Symptoms are interpreted conditions that may require action.

An event might trigger a symptom, but they are distinct concepts. A “low battery” event might trigger an “asset at risk” symptom.

Event Properties

  • Type - Classification of the event
  • Timestamp - When it occurred
  • Source - Which device reported it
  • Context - Additional relevant data
